Essays on the Rig Veda and its mystic symbolism, with translations of selected hymns. These writings on and translations of the Rig Veda were published in the monthly review Arya between 1914 and 1920. Most of them appeared there under three headings: The Secret of the Veda, 'Selected Hymns' and 'Hymns of the Atris'. Other translations that did not appear under any of these headings make up the final part of the volume.

Hymn to Brahmanaspati

I.18

Master of the Soul

सोमानं स्वरणं कृणुहि ब्रह्मणस्पते ।
कक्षीवन्तं य औशिजः ॥१॥

1) O Master of the Soul, make Kakshivan, Son of Ushij, a sweet soul and a good fighter.


यो रेवान्यो अमीवहा वसुवित्पुष्टिवर्धनः ।
स नः सिषक्तु यस्तुरः ॥२॥

2) May he who is bold and impetuous, who slays all unfriendly things, the knower of substance of being, the increaser of fullness, cleave to us, he who is strong and swift.


मा नः शंसो अररुषो धूर्तिः प्रणङ मर्त्यस्य ।
रक्षा णो ब्रह्मणस्पते ॥३॥

3) Let not the aspiration and the eagerness of mortal man in his struggle perish in us, O Master of the Soul, protect us.


स घा वीरो न रिष्यति यमिन्द्रो ब्रह्मणस्पतिः ।
सोमो हिनोति मर्त्यम् ॥४॥

4) That hero smites and is not hurt, whom Indra and Brahmanaspati and Soma befriend, a mortal man.


त्वं तं ब्रह्मणस्पते सोम इन्द्रश्च मर्त्यम् ।
दक्षिणा पात्वंहसः ॥५॥

5) Him mortal, O Brahmanaspati, let Soma protect from harm and Indra, both auspicious grown.


सदसस्पतिमद्भुतं प्रियमिन्द्रस्य काम्यम् ।
सनिं मेधामयासिषम् ॥६॥

6) I have laboured for1 the wondrous master of the house, the beloved, the desired of Indra, for steadfastness in weal I have laboured and for capacity of soul.


यस्मादृते न सिध्यति यज्ञो विपश्चितश्चन ।
स घीनां योगमिन्वति ॥७॥

7) He without whom the Yajna comes not to fulfilment, even of the man of discerning heart, he hath power over the Yoga of the movements of the understanding.


आदृघ्नोति हविष्कृतं प्राञ्चं कृणोत्यघ्वरम् ।
होत्रा देवेषु गच्छति ॥८॥

8) He confirms the offering of the oblations, he carries forward the work of the sacrifice, by the priest of the offering he moves with the gods.


नराशंसं सुधृष्टममपश्यं सप्रथस्तमम् ।
दिवो न सद्ममखसम् ॥९॥

9) I saw One, strong of aspiration, utterly audacious, wide and expanding besieging as it were the seats of heaven.
