This first volume is mostly what could be called the "psychological preparation" of Satprem. Mother's confidant had to be prepared, not only to understand the evolutionary meaning of Mother's discoveries, to follow the tenuous thread of man's great future unravelled through so many apparently disconcerting experiences - which certainly required a steady personal determination for more than 19 years! - but also, in a way, he had to share the battle against the many established forces that account for the present human mode of being and bear the onslaught of the New Force. Satprem - "True Love" - as Mother called him, was a reluctant disciple. Formed in the French Cartesian mold, a freedom fighter against the Nazis and in love with his freedom, he was always ready to run away, and always coming back, drawn by a love greater than his love for freedom. Slowly she conquered him, slowly he came to understand the poignant drama of this lone and indomitable woman, struggling in the midst of an all-too-human humanity in her attempt to open man's golden future. Week after week, privately, she confided to him her intimate experiences, the progress of her endeavour, the obstacles, the setbacks, as well as anecdotes of her life, her hopes, her conquests and laughter: she was able to be herself with him. He loved her and she trusted him. It is that simple.

Douce Mère,
J’ai parlé de ton expérience, mais on a si peu de temps pour parler avec tout ce monde, que je n’ai pas pu donner beaucoup de détails ni recevoir des explications très claires. X. connaît très bien cette Lumière, ou ces vagues lumineuses bleu-violet avec la barre blanche au centre. Il m’a fait sa description qui coïncide exactement avec la tienne... Bref, il voulait dire que peut-être cette Lumière venait de ses concentrations autour de toi, même quand il est à Rameswaram. Je lui ai parlé de cette universalisation de ton corps. Il a acquiescé comme quelqu’un qui comprend, mais sans faire de commentaires. A propos du globe orange, il a dit ceci: «Every time, before meditation with Mother, I utter some letters. And as you know, each letter has a colour. There are 51 ways to combine letters, and there are 51 “paths”, or 51 places in the body where the force can act. Thus the orange globe is probably the effect of some letters, it may be some protection for her body.»1 En tout cas, il semblait trouver très normal que tes expériences de cette lumière bleu-violet coïncident à peu près avec votre relation, et dans tous les poudja il y a ces «diagrammes» ou «Yantrams» qui ont toujours des formes géométriques. (Il m’a dit un jour: «Those diagrams are the stations for the goddesses to come down.» Ces diagrammes sont des stations pour que les déesses descendent.)
Quand je suis allé chercher Z. ce soir, elle était en proie à des difficultés (m’a-t-elle dit), comme si ce Mantra avait provoqué des contrecoups. X. a aussitôt fait une petite opération et elle est partie toute souriante.
Pour moi, il a dit ceci: «To-morrow I shall give you another mantra of three letters. Now I am going to change the Power into a feminine form. After sometimes you will see a small girl appear in front of you, a girl of about 10, and she will come to help you. This mantra you will have to repeat 3 lakhs for three months. And after three months I shall give you full initiation.»2 Puis il m’a expliqué qu’on ne pouvait pas tout d’un coup faire entrer la mer entière dans un pot, il fallait peu à peu habituer le corps, et la sâdhanâ c’est justement d’habituer le corps à recevoir de plus en plus l’immensité du Pouvoir.
