This first volume is mostly what could be called the "psychological preparation" of Satprem. Mother's confidant had to be prepared, not only to understand the evolutionary meaning of Mother's discoveries, to follow the tenuous thread of man's great future unravelled through so many apparently disconcerting experiences - which certainly required a steady personal determination for more than 19 years! - but also, in a way, he had to share the battle against the many established forces that account for the present human mode of being and bear the onslaught of the New Force. Satprem - "True Love" - as Mother called him, was a reluctant disciple. Formed in the French Cartesian mold, a freedom fighter against the Nazis and in love with his freedom, he was always ready to run away, and always coming back, drawn by a love greater than his love for freedom. Slowly she conquered him, slowly he came to understand the poignant drama of this lone and indomitable woman, struggling in the midst of an all-too-human humanity in her attempt to open man's golden future. Week after week, privately, she confided to him her intimate experiences, the progress of her endeavour, the obstacles, the setbacks, as well as anecdotes of her life, her hopes, her conquests and laughter: she was able to be herself with him. He loved her and she trusted him. It is that simple.

Douce Mère, je sens intensément, presque douloureusement combien tous mes rapports avec le monde extérieur sont faux, obscurs, ignorants. Dès que je sors du cœur de mon être, tous mes actes sont «à peu près», tous mes contacts avec les autres êtres sont troubles, mon travail lui-même est entaché de mille petits motifs douteux. Mère, je sais d’une certitude aveuglante – même si cette certitude n’est que mentale – que la seule solution c’est de toucher en moi l’être vrai. Je sais qu’en trouvant l’être vrai, je trouverai l’action juste, les rapports justes avec l’extérieur, la vérité, la connaissance, la joie. Je sais cela, maintenant, de façon profonde et plus rien ne peut me détourner de cela. Chaque soir cette Vérité vient m’étreindre physiquement. Et pourtant chaque matin, j’ai à moitié oublié et je passe presque toute la journée à la surface de mon être.
O Mère, quand donc ma vérité du soir deviendra-t-elle aussi ma vérité du jour?
il faut que quelque chose éclate en moi et vienne s’emparer de tout mon être. Ce ne sont pas mes forces qui peuvent faire cela, mais la tienne. Mère, je t’implore en grâce d’ouvrir en moi les portes de l’être vrai. Je ne veux plus de ces rapports faux avec l’extérieur, de cette vie «à peu près». Je veux être ton instrument, non l’instrument de cet ego ignorant et douloureux. Mère, je ne demande rien que le vrai, la Lumière, ce qui est le vrai moi. J’en ai assez, assez de ce moi de surface qui envahit presque toutes mes journées.
Que ta Volonté soit faite.
