The 'psychological preparation' of Satprem for his role as The Mother's confidant, as She narrated her experiences of the 'yoga of the cells' from 1951-1973.
This first volume is mostly what could be called the "psychological preparation" of Satprem. Mother's confidant had to be prepared, not only to understand the evolutionary meaning of Mother's discoveries, to follow the tenuous thread of man's great future unravelled through so many apparently disconcerting experiences - which certainly required a steady personal determination for more than 19 years! - but also, in a way, he had to share the battle against the many established forces that account for the present human mode of being and bear the onslaught of the New Force. Satprem - "True Love" - as Mother called him, was a reluctant disciple. Formed in the French Cartesian mold, a freedom fighter against the Nazis and in love with his freedom, he was always ready to run away, and always coming back, drawn by a love greater than his love for freedom. Slowly she conquered him, slowly he came to understand the poignant drama of this lone and indomitable woman, struggling in the midst of an all-too-human humanity in her attempt to open man's golden future. Week after week, privately, she confided to him her intimate experiences, the progress of her endeavour, the obstacles, the setbacks, as well as anecdotes of her life, her hopes, her conquests and laughter: she was able to be herself with him. He loved her and she trusted him. It is that simple.

(Fragment einer Unterhaltung über die Übersetzung von Sri Aurobindos Aphorismus: "... Wissen ist soviel von der Wahrheit, als das Mental tastend in einem entstellten Medium erfassen kann; Weisheit, was das Auge der göttlichen Vision im Geist sieht."
Mutter vergleicht die Wahrheit mit rein weißem Licht und setzt dann fort:)
... Aber dieses Weiß besteht ja aus allen Farben. So nimmst du eine Sache wahr, aber anstatt sie Weiß zu sehen, entgehen einige Farben deiner Wahrnehmung gänzlich: du siehst Rot, Grün, Gelb, Blau oder etwas anderes, jedoch nicht das Weiß, weil einige Farben fehlen. Das ist ein sehr gutes Bildnis. Das entstellte Medium kann nicht alles wahrnehmen, sondern nur teilweise erkennen - aber nicht teilweise die Teile eines vollkommenen Ganzen: ein Bestandteil einer Mischung, deren Gesamtheit ihm entgeht, weil das Medium ungeeignet ist, die Gesamtheit zu manifestieren oder auszudrücken oder auch nur zu erkennen.
Das Bildnis der Farben ist sehr zutreffend.
Die Wahrheit ist ein wiederhergestelltes weißes Licht, weil sie alles enthält, was ist. Das Medium eurer Sicht ist ungeeignet, alle Elemente oder alle Farben zu manifestieren - und man darf wohl sagen, daß die besten verloren gehen. Anstatt ein weißes Licht zu sehen, sieht man eine Sammlung von Farben des Objekts, von dem sie stammen.
Sri Aurobindo drückte es absichtlich so vage wie möglich aus: "soviel von der Wahrheit ... als das Mental erfassen kann." Es muß so vage wie möglich ausgedrückt werden: jede Präzision ist entstellend. Ich suchte eine ganze Stunde lang, ohne etwas zu finden. Ich sagte: "Autant de la vérité ... que le mental peut saisir." "Autant" ist nicht sehr elegant und kein gutes Französisch, aber ich glaube es ist das einzige, was keine Entstellung bedeutet (außer du hast einen besseren Vorschlag). Was du sagst, ist jedenfalls unannehmbar; du kannst nicht sagen "der Teil oder Anteil der Wahrheit", es ist kein Anteil, überhaupt nicht.
Dann müssen wir sagen: "Das Wissen ist das, was das Mental in einem entstellten Medium von der Wahrheit erfassen kann..."
