Reflections on Auroville

✦   ✦   ✦

These reflections have not been written by an Aurovillian, nor by someone intimately connected with Auroville. They are the remarks of an observer who has quietly and attentively followed Auroville's journey.

As for what right I have to address Auroville—what presumption or vainglorious impulse might animate this endeavour—I am not unaware of human limitations and can offer only a prayer in response.

To see this species of grey dwarfs scurrying around and to not want to belong to it anymore—
Is this Vanity O Lord?

To know that there is no 'I' separate from 'them' and to want ALL of us to stop being dwarfs—
Is this Ambition O Lord?

But if my words are unable to reach them, I know it is because my action is not perfect.

For I know too, O Lord—True Consciousness is True Power and THAT acts without opposition and without reactions.

Thus, however imperfect in its manifestation, this work is driven by no agenda, no sense of mission, and the author claims no special credentials—except a belief, perhaps unfounded, that only a TRUE CRY can TRULY Manifest Auroville. May someone arise to embody that cry.

Reflections

I
Auroville 1.0 failed not because it broke the laws of the old world but because it could never really embody the Laws of The New World. We assumed the mantle of Supermen without attaining their consciousness, and thus proved unworthy of the unprecedented freedom that was entrusted to Auroville. There ends its indictment. ✦ ✦ ✦ Auroville 2.0 is remarkably unpretentious for a start. We are back on earth, and we begin modestly. We implement plans, correct old mistakes, overcome stagnation, and restore organisation and discipline. Even if some of its brochures are too mundane to be reflecting the aspirations of the pioneers of the Future, Auroville 2.0 appears to possess goodwill - it carries a renewed sense of purpose, and it sets a Force in motion. There ends its credit.

II
A grand battle was once fought to protect Auroville from the vibrations of the old world. Half a century later the world bears witness—Auroville didn't want to DEFEAT the old world, it wanted to BECOME the old world. But in its own way… at its own pace… make a little greener, recyclable and more sustainable falsehood. For there are 1000 ways of being fallible and human — the 'Society' is not the only one. And hence, once a bitter foe, now a respectable collaborator has the last laugh—"If this is all you wanted, we could have done this better together — and 50 years ago!"

III
There are a million unfulfilled dreams of The Divine since the time Earth began. They lie buried in oblivion when not savagely distorted, but none seem to have pricked the human conscience. Interestingly, humanity solemnly picks the easiest one to fulfil: a governmental contract to build a city according to dimensions. And yet it faces so much resistance!

IV
If the Splendour that gave birth to this Adventure were to actually manifest—we would hold the Galaxy in our bodies and BECOME Vast and Immortal. But that would mean the end of 'ME'—and MY righteous pleasure of fighting for or against the Galaxy Plan on earth!

V
Auroville is not invincible—it is a means to achieve a GOAL that is invincible. ✦ ✦ ✦ We seem to constantly forget this — if Auroville no longer represents the highest mankind is capable of — it WILL BE surpassed. Truth is on a march and it will sweep them away—leaving behind the ruins from which they can build their galaxy city or the green belt with all the autonomy in the world. It is only a leap towards the Future that can save them. And us.

VI
The Future of Auroville is neither in its forests Nor in its city. The Future is elsewhere. ✦ ✦ ✦ We fight for the 'Mother's dream' A dream so human that almost unrecognisable. Betrayed then—misunderstood now. Mother's dream is elsewhere. ✦ ✦ ✦ Once strangled with anarchy Now tamed with order Blind then and half-blind now Man's destiny is elsewhere. ✦ ✦ ✦ Failed to leap into the Future— Now thrust into the past 50 years squandered in waste New bonds we now embrace— It was an Experiment then— It is an Experiment now But the Adventure is elsewhere. ✦ ✦ ✦ We reject the eco-village and brandish the smart-city Unworthy of Superman then, unworthy now. Little men flourished then, little men flourish now And humanity dances its way to Death For Life is elsewhere. ✦ ✦ ✦ The pioneering race packages the obsolete as the new And sees no comedy in that. A dying species holds sustainability as its highest virtue And sees no irony in this. A city of Future marches on with an impoverished vision of the Future— And sees no tragedy in this. But the New World is elsewhere.

VII
Ask—O dear Auroville—ask If Athens didn't survive And Tibet lies in shambles And Vatican lost its Light And Kremlin became a farce Believe you that your roads and jobs And buildings and trees will save Thee? If 3000 couldn't embody THAT—50,000 will?

VIII
Recall—O dear Auroville—Recall— You are greater than your inhabitants No matter of what shade and kind But one knows not how to save Thee Except by winning that Victory— Which is of neither side.

IX
Seek—O dear Auroville—Seek That unknown lever which is neither in your infrastructure nor in its absence— That Power which is wielded neither by your committees, nor by your rebels— That Force which drives neither your development nor your protests— That Consciousness which requires neither debates nor discussions— For IT SEES. IT KNOWS. IT ACHIEVES. Because IT IS.
