A manual on the natural care of the eye with exercises to improve eyesight & treat various eye disorders. Also includes letters by Sri Aurobindo on yogic vision
This book, which is a comprehensive manual on the natural care of the eye, starts from the concept that eyesight is intricately connected to the mind and explains how good habits of eye care and mental relaxation can keep the eyes rested and refreshed. It then suggests simple but effective exercises to improve eyesight and treat various eye disorders. There are also chapters on the discoveries of Dr W. H. Bates and the physiology of the eye, as well as case histories, question-and-answer sections, and some letters by Sri Aurobindo on eyesight and yogic vision.
With imperfect sight, a mental picture of one known letter of the Snellen test card is seldom remembered, imagined or seen perfectly when regarded with the eyes open. By closing the eyes, the same mental picture may be imagined more perfectly. By alternately imagining the known letter as well as possible with the eyes open and then remembering it better with the eyes closed, the imagination improves the vision and unknown letters are seen with the eyes open. It is a fact that a good or perfect imagination of mental pictures brings about a measure of improvement in eyesight which is convincing.
While the colon is a valuable punctuation mark, its mental picture is very valuable to help the memory, imagination and sight. With the eyes closed or open. the top period should be imagined best while the lower period is more or less blurred and not seen so well. In a few moments it is well to shift the sight and imagine the lower period best while the upper period is imagined not so well. Common sense makes it evident that one period cannot be imagined best unless there is some other period or object which is seen worse. The smallest colon that can be imagined is usually the one that is imagined more readily than a larger colon. To remember or imagine a colon perfectly requires constant shifting. When the colon is remembered or imagined perfectly, and this cannot be done by any effort or strain, the sight is always improved. One may feel that the memory of a very small colon should be more difficult than the memory of a large one, but strange to say it can be demonstrated in most cases that the very small colon is remembered best.
