This book, which is a comprehensive manual on the natural care of the eye, starts from the concept that eyesight is intricately connected to the mind and explains how good habits of eye care and mental relaxation can keep the eyes rested and refreshed. It then suggests simple but effective exercises to improve eyesight and treat various eye disorders. There are also chapters on the discoveries of Dr W. H. Bates and the physiology of the eye, as well as case histories, question-and-answer sections, and some letters by Sri Aurobindo on eyesight and yogic vision.

Questions and Answers

A Minister to Government of India consults Dr. Agarwal.

N. I want to consult you, doctor.

D. Tell me what is your trouble.

N. Doctors suspect glaucoma and advise me to get my eyes examined every three months.

D. Suppose the trouble is increased, will they be able to prevent it or cure it?

N. No, they will advise pilocarpine drops.

D. Why do they suspect glaucoma?

N. They find cupping in the optic disc: otherwise the eyes are quite normal.

D. How did your eye trouble start?

N. Three years back, I was getting attacks of temporary blindness. At times there was a pricking pain also but the doctors found my eyes quite all right.

D. What is the trouble at present?

N. At present there is no trouble but about a month back I was getting severe pain and headache; usually in the morning after sleep I felt very uncomfortable. Can you tell me what is the cause of my trouble?

D. Do you know that your memory is also affected?

N. Yes, I know.

D. Don't you feel uncomfortable with your glasses?

N. Yes, they hurt my eyes but I use them as the doctors have advised me to do so.

D. Can you read this fine print in this electric light?

N. I can read but don't feel comfortable.

D. How do you find reading in candlelight?

N. Fine print is clear and it is soothing and comfortable to read it in candlelight.

D. The cause of your trouble is reading and working for long hours under a bright electric light.

N. Is it bad to read under a bright light? All along I have been working and reading under a bright light.

D. Reading under a bright light can do much harm. I shall show you two cases who have suffered a lot by reading for long hours under a high power electric light.

N. Yes, I have read your articles in Mother India where you have recommended reading fine print in dim light or candlelight at a close distance, but all these ideas are quite opposite to the general belief.

D. Those who advise to read big print at arm's length and in bright light are persons who are above forty. At this age the capacity to read fine print in dim light is lost, so they advise thus, otherwise reading, fine print in candlelight is extremely beneficial, while reading large print under bright light is extremely harmful.

N. It is said that glaucoma makes the person blind.

D. Many lose their sight in spite of all medical aid. But all these cases are curable in the early stage by eye education and mental relaxation. And all can be saved from blindness.

N. When I had trouble, one doctor found the tension just above normal, but after some days another doctor found it below normal.

D. The former doctor examined you when you were having eve trouble, the eyes were under a strain. The other doctor examined your eyes when the trouble was over.

N. That is right. But tell me one thing frankly, "Can you prevent and cure my trouble?"

D. Yes, in a week's time you can be all right and the eyes will become immune to future attacks.

N. Thank you very much. I will surely undergo your treatment.
