This book, which is a comprehensive manual on the natural care of the eye, starts from the concept that eyesight is intricately connected to the mind and explains how good habits of eye care and mental relaxation can keep the eyes rested and refreshed. It then suggests simple but effective exercises to improve eyesight and treat various eye disorders. There are also chapters on the discoveries of Dr W. H. Bates and the physiology of the eye, as well as case histories, question-and-answer sections, and some letters by Sri Aurobindo on eyesight and yogic vision.

Questions and Answers

When I read big print I feel a strain and discomfort but when I read small print I feel relaxed and comfortable. Why is it so?

In reading big print one has to see a larger area at a time and this affects the sensitiveness of the eyes and gives the feeling of strain; while in reading small print one sees a smaller area and this helps the eyes sensitiveness and so one feels relaxed. When small print can be read in the right way. without any discomfort, it becomes extremely beneficial to the eyes.

You say successful palming is very effective in relieving strain and headache and in improving eyesight, but when I do palming I do not see perfect darkness before my eyes. What do you suggest?

Look at something black or the Chart letter, then close the eyes and recall the black colour seen. Repeat this several times till the memory and the sight are equal. Then do palming. Continue palming for 15 to 20 minutes.

My eyesight is all right but I cannot read comfortably, the right eye suffers. What to do?

Read Fine Print in good light and in candlelight alternately three times, with both eyes and each eye separately.

When I get up in the morning, my eyes open with difficulty, at times there is some headache also. And I find my memory becoming dull.

Before sleep and after sleep practise palming for about 20 minutes.

How is it that on some days I can see the whole chart but on other days only a few lines?

When there is no strain the vision is normal. Continuous practice will make the sight all right on other days too.

Why is my vision worse on a rainy or cloudy day than in broad daylight?

Because you strain to see on a dark day. Practise palming more on such days.

The vision in my son's eyes is failing due to retinitis pigmentosa. Doctors of India and abroad give no hope and the boy is supposed to become blind in due course of time. Is there any hope by your methods?

Yes, your son can improve but cannot be cured.

My eyesight is normal. What should I do to keep it so?

Read an Eye-chart at a twenty feet distance and read fine print daily.

If the letters of the Eye-chart can be seen more distinctly with the eyes partly closed or a little screwed, is it advisable to read that way?

No, it is not advisable. Look at the letters of the Eye-chart with gentle blinking

Can a patient, while practising your method, carry on his work as usual?

Yes, most patients continue their work just the same and find time to practise palming several times a day and, during all their activities, they do gentle blinking.

Is looking at the green grass or the blue sky helpful to the eyes?

Yes, because there is nothing to stare at.

Instead of palming, can I sit in a dark room or cover my eyes with a black cloth or bandage them?

No, it does not serve the purpose of palming.

I am suffering from glaucoma and early cataract. Can your methods help me?

If your eyesight is defective apart from these diseases, it can certainly be improved in spite of them. As for these diseases, each case is individual and we have to try out our methods
to see what results they may have. According to Dr. Bates, cataract-opacity of a certain kind—one due to contraction of the lens—is curable by his methods of eye-relaxation.

Can you tell me the dates of birth and death of Dr. Bates?

Dr. Bates was born on December 23, 1860 and died on July 10, 1931. It is in 1931 that I started the work on Dr. Bates' lines.
