This book, which is a comprehensive manual on the natural care of the eye, starts from the concept that eyesight is intricately connected to the mind and explains how good habits of eye care and mental relaxation can keep the eyes rested and refreshed. It then suggests simple but effective exercises to improve eyesight and treat various eye disorders. There are also chapters on the discoveries of Dr W. H. Bates and the physiology of the eye, as well as case histories, question-and-answer sections, and some letters by Sri Aurobindo on eyesight and yogic vision.

Relief from Blindness

While many persons are benefited by the accepted methods of treating defects of vision by glasses and operations, there are some cases, known to every eye specialist, which get little or no help from them. These patients sometimes give up the search for relief in despair, and sometimes continue it with surprising pertinacity, never being able to abandon the belief that somewhere in the world there must be someone with sufficient skill who could cure them. The rapidity with which these patients respond to treatment by relaxation is often dramatic, and affords a startling illustration of the superiority of the relaxation methods to treatment by glasses and injections.

One case was a woman of thirty-five, a mother of five children, and her imperfect sight was accompanied by misery, insomnia and night blindness. Two years back there was a robbery in her house and she was beaten. Since then this patient developed a great fear, lost sleep and the vision deteriorated; afterwards the condition became so serious that she was totally blind after 5.30 p.m. She went to various eye specialists of Orissa but found no relief. However, she did not waste time when she came to know about the School for Perfect Eyesight at Pondicherry. Her husband being a railway servant could easily travel and one morning I found the couple waiting to consult me. When examined, her vision proved fairly good in normal light, but in dim light she could not see anything. Various relaxation eye exercises were given and the eyes were bandaged for an hour twice a day. On the fifth day the husband reported that she could see all right in the evening. To test her ability to see in dim light I called them to my room after 6 p.m. She could see everything quite well in dimlight as well as in electric light. It was now 7 p.m. Her husband suddenly pointing at something, asked her, "Do you see that?" She began to stare badly and lost her eyesight; she was then blind within five minutes.

So the husband was warned not to test her in this way. After that she was left free. And now with two weeks' treatment she is quite all right at night, sleeps well, sees movies and remains cheerful.

Another was a case of blindness. The patient writes his experience:

"In 1954, one fine morning I suddenly noticed that I was seeing nothing practically with my right eye even with glasses. I consulted two leading eye specialists of Calcutta who after extensive treatment for about two months gave the verdict—'Your right eye should be taken as lost.' After some time I had similar trouble with my left eye.

"I gave up all hope about my right eye as it had some retinal degeneration and I took it to be my fate that I would have to lead my life almost like a blind man. Then in December of that year Dr. Agarwal was on a short tour in Calcutta. I came in contact with him and underwent treatment by his unique method. After scrupulously following his directions for some weeks, I began to regain my lost vision. Within a very short period I went back to my normal life.

"Sixteen long years have passed and even today I can read and write without glasses and can move around the busy streets. My words are too inadequate to express my gratitude to Dr. Agarwal. But for him I would have been a blind man. Through him the Mother's Grace has been showered on my eyes."

This patient still has retinal degeneration in his right eye but that eye maintains almost normal vision and is far better than the other eye which has no degeneration and is apparently quite normal. An eye specialist friend of his was surprised to observe this fact. The patient then put some questions to Dr. Agarwal.

How is it that I maintain such good vision although the centre of sight, the macular area, is still in a bad condition?

When there is some organic defect, there is always some functional defect. We have cured the functional defect, hence the sight has improved. Moreover, the macula is a small spot of the retina which is damaged, the rest of the retina is quite all right and Nature has helped the eye to function well through the rest of the retina.

It means patients suffering from semi-blindness due to retinitis, retinitis pigmentosa or some other retinal defect can also be benefited.

Yes, most of them can be greatly benefited by eye education and mental relaxation. A case of retinitis pigmentosa showed remarkable improvement and was saved from blindness.
