This book, which is a comprehensive manual on the natural care of the eye, starts from the concept that eyesight is intricately connected to the mind and explains how good habits of eye care and mental relaxation can keep the eyes rested and refreshed. It then suggests simple but effective exercises to improve eyesight and treat various eye disorders. There are also chapters on the discoveries of Dr W. H. Bates and the physiology of the eye, as well as case histories, question-and-answer sections, and some letters by Sri Aurobindo on eyesight and yogic vision.

Suggestions

  1. If the vision of the patient is improved under the care of the doctor and the patient, when he leaves the clinic, neglects to practise what he is told to do at home. the treatment has been of no benefit whatever. The improved vision was only temporary. Faithful practice permanently improves the vision.

  2. If the patient conscientiously practises the methods as advised by the doctor. his vision always improves.

  3. When a patient suffers from cataract, palming is usually the best method of treatment, and should be practised many times every day.

  4. All patients with imperfect sight unconsciously stare, and should be reminded by those who are near them to blink often. To stare is a strain. Strain is the cause of imperfect sight.

  5. While sitting, do not look up without raising your chin. Always turn your head in the direction in which you look.

  6. Do not make an effort to see things more clearly. If you let your eyes alone, things will clear up by themselves.

  7. Do not look at anything longer than a fraction of a second without shifting.

  8. While reading shift your head and eyes together from side to side with gentle blinking.

  9. When you are conscious of your eyes while looking at objects at any time, it causes discomfort and lessens your vision.

  10. It is very important that you learn how to imagine stationary objects to be moving, as you seem to observe while moving in a train.

  11. Palming is a help, and I suggest that you palm for a few minutes several times a day. To palm at bedtime induces good sleep.
