This book, which is a comprehensive manual on the natural care of the eye, starts from the concept that eyesight is intricately connected to the mind and explains how good habits of eye care and mental relaxation can keep the eyes rested and refreshed. It then suggests simple but effective exercises to improve eyesight and treat various eye disorders. There are also chapters on the discoveries of Dr W. H. Bates and the physiology of the eye, as well as case histories, question-and-answer sections, and some letters by Sri Aurobindo on eyesight and yogic vision.

Chapter V

Variations in Eyesight

  1. Usually myopic patients of -3 or more can hardly read more than 10/200, and can hardly read the small print of Fundamentals at more than 6 inches.

  2. But some cases of high myopia can read 10/50 line or more without glasses and do not show much improvement with glasses. They can read small print at about 10 inches.

  3. In some cases the vision is quite poor for distance though corrected with glasses but in reading they can read the small print at about 12 inches.

  4. In a small number of cases once the glasses are prescribed, the number is almost constant. This is harmless myopia.

  5. Mostly the number of glasses goes on increasing slowly, say once in two years a little increase.

  6. In certain cases the deterioration in eyesight is quite fast. Such cases when timely treated respond well.

  7. Usually the variation is quite marked when the patient looks at objects with lids raised and when lids down and blinking.

  8. Some myopic patients feel great strain and headache as soon as they put on glasses while some are greatly relieved by the use of glasses.

  9. Use of glasses in reading is usually detrimental because the vision for reading is quite good or better than with glasses.

  10. All cases of visual defects improve their eyesight by eye education and mental relaxation. Flashes of great improvement occur quite often.

  11. In some cases the error or refraction as demonstrated by retinoscope does not change though the vision is considerably improved and comes to normal with the lower power of glasses.

  12. In a case of +8 hypermetropia the vision was almost the same with or without glasses. By eye education his vision greatly improved and he felt no necessity of glasses. But retinoscope continued to show the same error of refraction.

  13. It is difficult to say who will respond much to the treatment though some idea is formed due to experience and inspiration. However, persons having -12 or more while going under treatment feel no difficulty without glasses in their movements; they walk about without strain, without headache.

  14. A case of -7 using contact lenses greatly surprised us when she improved her eyesight to almost normal in 3 days. We had no idea that such a high myopic case could improve so much. This broke our old conception.

  15. Two similar cases with equal vision without glasses require different power of glasses for full correction. First case needs -8 dioptres to see 6/6, whereas the second one, with nearly the same history needs only -1.5 dioptres.

According to the laws of optics such a queer phenomenon is not possible. Moreover, in the first case, after the treatment of his myopia, glasses of -6 dioptres made little difference. Without glasses he begins to see as much as he used to see prior to the treatment with glasses of -5.5 dioptres. Whereas in the second case, addition of a mere -0.5 makes a great difference, though according to the laws of optics a lens of a certain dioptre will, in all conditions, have the same divergence faculty. And above all, the retinoscope does not show much improvement though the subject experiences it for sure.
