Born in Calcutta, she grew up in the cultural and artistic atmosphere of Shantiniketan under the patronage of the poet Rabindranath Tagore. She lost her mother at the age of seven. Her father's world collapsed; he began searching for another dimension to which he could dedicate his life. In Pondicherry, he discovered Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. His children, one after another, would follow him. Thus, for example, Sujata, upon seeing Sri Aurobindo for the first time in February 1935 at the age of nine, decided in May 1938 to remain by his side — she would live in Pondicherry for 43 years. Her education was overseen by teachers under the guidance of the distinguished mathematician, chemist and engineer, the Frenchman Pavitra, who directed education at the Ashram and served as its chief secretary. Later, Sujata became his secretary and also worked with him in his laboratory, where she prepared various compounds for the Mother. She took an active part in the new physical education introduced by the Mother. Satprem arrived in early 1954. At nearly thirty years of age, he gave lessons to the best students and helped Pavitra manage his correspondence. After some time, the Mother asked him to assist her in translating Sri Aurobindo's books. It was thus that Satprem and Sujata joined their destinies. The Mother then entrusted Sujata with typing out her personal conversations with Satprem — the "Agenda." From 1965 onward, Sujata regularly accompanied Satprem during his meetings with the Mother.
After the Mother's passing in 1973, the Ashram, which had been a place of living experience, became an ordinary institution. In 1978 — the centenary of the Mother — the Ashram administration "expelled" Satprem on account of the trilogy about the Mother he had just written.
From 1978 onward, Satprem and Sujata lived far from Pondicherry, devoting themselves entirely to the publication of the works of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, and endeavoring to continue the experience in the cellular consciousness of the body.
Sujata is the author of the Chronicles of the Mother, several volumes containing a detailed biography of the Mother and Sri Aurobindo, as well as an exploration of their Work.
