A Day Begun and Ending with the Grace All resistance of the night had fled When from the east a ray of beauty shone And I awoke Her name upon my lips And sweetness entering from the Alone. With beauty beckoning forthcoming dawn I greet the wild-eyed singers on the boughs. What wondrous scenes awaken with the sun; The green lake mirroring the trees, The Georgia bird, the Thrasher in the leaves, The Cardinal in his brilliant summer coat, While from the nearest branch the chickadee Reminds the food is gone, scolding me. Across the silken water skimming low The Great Blue Heron silently Prepares his stealthy day in calm, A hunter motionless upon the shore. And there are flowers chanting to the skies Surrender's song while noisy squirrels hide Among the branches fragranted with dew. What joy it is to be alive this day For eighty years will soon have come and gone, And I, young as always in my soul Cherish the earth, with lissome flowers decked Begin my walk among the great and small Creations of a force divine at work.
