Would I across the evening's fragrance sigh For light so swiftly gone from earthly eyes As darkness quenched the blue of sea and sky And death that came accepting life's demise? In the breaking of the morn and down to night, In the maturation of a lonely cell Divided and joined and always seeking light, Man answer to the ringing of the bell. I found a faith amid the world, unmoved, A mountain vision pillaring the skies Though all I have encountered here and loved Is gone and Heaven has surely heard my cries, And yet within slowly the calm descends All pain and sorrow into sweetness blends.
