Sept. 29. 2010
I will not take the drink tonight that dulls Or swallow tablets easing me to sleep But listen to the rain that softly lulls This weary heart to rest; I shall not weep For beauty lost, her ashes in foreign seas Far from this sleepy town where I alone Recall her smile, her gentle will to please. She is taken by the Shade and I atone For all my moments of forgetfulness Plodding my way to a destiny unknown, Returning again to feel her sweet caress. Will the soul that slowly grows within this breast Recognize her when it too must leave And tenderly is taken to its rest? If so I shall rejoice, no more shall grieve, For songs of joy and gratitude be mine When love shall all our future lives enshrine.
