And in that silence softer than the snow Deeper than the silent depths of sea, I stood before the man I once had been In the annals of my spirit's history. I could not recall the face or hear the song That issued from the heart of one so young, Nor trace the journey forward, swept away By currents of competing memories, The torments and the joys of youth long past. I saw as in a clouded glass all those beloved By me like a film with fo reign actors cast And knew them more as images than real Save fo r a few who present by my side, Helpers all and the guides upon the way, Unmoving stood and nowhere could I hide From indiscretions and the mind's revolts But they were here to help me overcome The long laborious and circling round Of vain ideas and sorrow that I become Diviner shaped on earth's celestial home.
